The 2nd of my Game-changers almost needs no introduction because he invented all that tapping stuff, was the forefather of neo-classical shredding, etc. There's enough evidence to suggest he didn't in actual fact but he did popularise it - especially in the Hard Rock world - and against the backdrop of the Prog / Punk wars of the late 70s. That's not the reason I think he's so brilliant, though. It's also why I'm not gonna give you a slice of 'Eruption' or 'Hot for Teacher' (yet again!).
For me, Ed's outstanding playing encompasses a whole lot more than the two-handed tapping techniques he's synonymous with. As you're listening to what I think is probably the best ever intro to a song / album consider the awesome tone, the hooky riffs, the excellent rhythmic approach throughout and the dynamic but subtle use of effects to frame the journey.
