Now, Mr. Eddie Van Halen was still doing some pretty incredible things throughout the 80s but I think a whole new level of excellence was ushered in on the back of what Joe Satriani had to say. A true master of tone, technique and texture, Satriani also taught Vai and Hammett how to shred. Seemingly a stickler for education and genuinely furthering his knowledge of the instrument, the number of tools and techniques applied to any one piece was always frightening.
One may continue to argue that guitar extremism went too far as shredders got faster and hotter (more on that next time) but this particular 'Extremist' always maintained a tasteful approach and could make that trademark Ibanez sing so sweetly as is evidenced on this track.
Sit back and prepare to be inspired...or, if you're already in the know, enjoy the trip down memory lane.
